Newfoundland and Labrador has carried out another provincial immigration draw in 2026, issuing fresh invitations to foreign workers and prospective permanent residents through its economic immigration pathways.

The province invited 186 candidates during its latest round of selections held on May 11. Invitations were distributed through the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), two key immigration systems designed to help employers fill labour shortages across the province.

This was the fifth draw conducted by the province in 2026 and the second selection round held during the month of May.

Most Invitations Issued Through the Provincial Nominee Program

The majority of selected candidates received invitations under the NLPNP, reinforcing the province’s continued emphasis on provincial nomination pathways.

Here is the complete breakdown from the latest round:

Immigration ProgramNumber of Invitations
Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP)168
Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)18
Total Invitations186

More than nine out of every ten invitations in this draw were issued through the NLPNP.

Provincial officials have not released details regarding the specific streams or occupations targeted in this round. However, Newfoundland and Labrador has consistently identified healthcare and allied medical occupations as high-priority sectors because of persistent staffing shortages in hospitals, clinics, and community care services.

Provincial Draw Sizes Have Gradually Become Smaller

While the province remains active in selecting immigrants, the number of invitations issued has steadily declined since the start of the year.

The March draw was the largest of 2026, while more recent rounds have seen smaller invitation totals.

The latest round represents the smallest draw size recorded by the province this year. Despite the lower invitation numbers, Newfoundland and Labrador continues to conduct regular immigration selections to support workforce and population growth objectives.

More Than 1,200 Invitations Issued So Far in 2026

Since the beginning of the year, the province has invited 1,276 candidates through both immigration pathways combined.

The NLPNP has dominated the province’s invitation activity in 2026, accounting for more than 84% of all invitations issued so far.

This approach highlights Newfoundland and Labrador’s preference for selecting immigrants through pathways that allow the province to directly address local labour shortages and economic priorities.

Immigration Activity Has Increased Compared to Last Year

The province has significantly expanded its immigration activity when compared to the same timeframe in 2025.

From January through May 11 last year, Newfoundland and Labrador held only two draws and issued a total of 584 invitations through the NLPNP and AIP.

In contrast, 2026 has already seen 1,276 invitations issued during the same period, reflecting a substantial increase in immigration selection activity.

The province also launched its first draw earlier and on a much larger scale this year.

The higher invitation volume suggests the province is responding more aggressively to labour market demands and demographic challenges, particularly in sectors struggling to recruit qualified workers.

How Candidates Can Apply for Newfoundland and Labrador Immigration

Individuals interested in immigrating through Newfoundland and Labrador’s economic immigration programs must first create an Expression of Interest (EOI) profile.

To qualify for most pathways under the NLPNP or AIP, candidates usually need a valid full-time job offer from an employer based in the province. Entrepreneur-focused categories are among the few exceptions.

Applicants are required to submit information related to:

  • Professional work experience
  • Educational credentials
  • Language test results
  • Employment details
  • Settlement plans within the province

The Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism (OIM) reviews submitted EOIs and selects candidates considered most suitable for provincial economic needs.

Successful candidates may then receive:

  • A provincial nomination through the NLPNP, or
  • An employer endorsement under the Atlantic Immigration Program

Application Timeline After Receiving an Invitation

Once an invitation has been issued, candidates must proceed with the formal application process within 60 days.

The next step differs depending on the immigration stream:

ProgramResponsible Party for Application Submission
NLPNPCandidate submits application
AIPEmployer submits application

EOI profiles remain valid for up to 12 months. Candidates who do not receive an invitation during that period must submit a new profile if they want to continue participating in future draws.

Key Factors That May Influence Selection

Newfoundland and Labrador may prioritize candidates based on several economic and demographic considerations.

Selection preference can be influenced by factors such as:

  • Employment in healthcare or essential service occupations
  • Work opportunities located outside large urban centres
  • Strong potential for long-term settlement in the province
  • Previous study experience in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Labour market shortages in targeted industries

As provinces across Canada continue to compete for skilled international workers, Newfoundland and Labrador’s immigration programs remain an important pathway for candidates seeking Canadian permanent residence and long-term employment opportunities.
