Alberta has gone big this month to entice additional skilled workers, hosting a string of immigration draws that issued over 1,400 invitations. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) continues to grow avenues for workers across the most important sectors, evidencing the province’s moves to address labor gaps as it builds up the workforce.

Largest Draw of the Year Under Opportunity Stream

It happened on September 12, 2025, as Alberta conducted the biggest draw this year under the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) issued applications for nomination to 1,113 international workers already working within the province. Candidates should have a minimum of 63 points.

This stream is exactly created for workers who already possess real full-time job offers provided by Alberta employers, so this stream is a significant avenue for those workers who already contribute to the Alberta province’s economy and would like to gain permanent residence.

Specialized Invitations for Technology and Law Enforcement Agencies

After the big-scale AOS draw, Alberta delved into the more targeted fields:

  • September 16 also saw the release of 320 invitations through the Alberta Technology Pathway to candidates already working within Alberta’s tech sector or those who received similar offers. At least a minimum score of 55 points, among the lowest this year’s threshold, was needed.
  • Alberta held a minor draw on September 17 as part of its Law Enforcement Pathway, releasing fewer than 10 candidates who were offered jobs by Alberta-wide police forces. Candidates needed a minimum of 56 points.
  • Each of these three draws produced a cumulative pool of invitations totaling 1,433 within the date range September 12-19.

Provincial Nomination Update

Alberta’s nomination quota for 2025 is one of the largest in recent years. By September 26, the province had issued 3,983 nominations out of its allocation of 4,875, leaving 892 more nominations to distribute by year’s end.

Breakdown of Streams that are active reveals:

  • Opportunity Stream: 2,146 invitations were sent out, leaving the remaining 446.
  • Healthcare Pathways: 376 nominations released, remaining 124.
  • Stream for Rural Renewal: 720 nominations were issued, with the remaining 230.
  • Tourism & Hospitality: 203 nominations submitted, incl. 42 that are pending.
  • Accelerated Tech Pathway: Fully utilized at 146 nominations.
  • Law Enforcement Stream: There were 13 nominations that were issued, leaving 7 still unallocated.
  • Priority Sector Draws: 363 issued, remaining 42.

Federal Funds Provide Candidates More Leeway

In a significant change, the federal government recently increased Alberta’s quota for the year 2025 by a further 1,528 nominations, taking the quota to 6,403 from 4,875. While the formal program numbers are still not revised to reflect the increased numbers, the addition is a guarantee that more applicants stand the chance to be issued a provincial nomination in the months ahead.

Employment for Skilled Workers

These draws reflect Alberta’s multi-stream strategy to attracting immigration: aiding in-province workers through the Opportunity Stream, attracting international expertise in the tech sector, and meeting acute public sector demands in policing. As additional federal spots are offered, applicants across the healthcare sector, the tourism sector, the rural sector, and priority sectors would gain.

Alberta’s plan explicitly mentions that the province is undertaking more than merely offsetting existing labor deficits, as it is also making investments ahead in economic growth through the global arrival of skilled workers.
