The Northwest Territories is opening up additional immigration opportunities after receiving a larger nomination quota from the federal government for 2026.

The territory has been awarded 103 extra nomination spaces, increasing its annual capacity from 197 to 300. The decision gives the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) greater scope to respond to local hiring requirements and select foreign workers who can contribute to the region’s economy.

The announcement also brings changes to the territory’s remaining immigration schedule, including an additional selection round for candidates under the Employer-Driven Stream.

Federal Increase Creates More Space for NWT Nominees

The revised allocation means the NTNP can now nominate as many as 300 candidates during 2026.

This is a substantial improvement over the territory’s original quota. It also restores the allocation to the level the NWT eventually achieved in 2025 after receiving additional spaces during that year.

The territorial government has linked the increase to its ongoing efforts to secure an immigration allocation that better reflects the Northwest Territories’ workforce realities.

For foreign nationals with suitable employment opportunities in the territory, the larger quota could translate into more chances to pursue a nomination before the end of 2026.

August EOI Draw Added to Immigration Calendar

One of the immediate consequences of the increased allocation is a new Employer-Driven Stream Expression of Interest (EOI) draw scheduled for August 26, 2026.

Candidates hoping to be considered in this round must have the support of an eligible employer. The employer must submit the required application no later than August 24.

This means applicants should not wait until the final day to coordinate with their employers. The employer’s participation is a necessary part of the process, and an individual EOI submission alone does not guarantee consideration.

Four NTNP Selection Rounds Planned This Year

The revised schedule gives the NTNP a total of four Employer-Driven Stream selection rounds during 2026.

Two rounds have already been completed, providing a useful indication of how the program has been selecting candidates.

The first selection round produced 65 invitations, followed by a larger intake of 79 invitations in June.

The NWT Express Entry pathway was the largest individual category in both rounds, with 32 invitations in March and 40 in June.

After the newly announced August round, another selection is expected on September 25. Candidates who want their profiles to be considered for that final round must enter the EOI pool by September 22.

Previous NWT Draws Showed Different Score Ranges

The results from the first two selections also demonstrate that invitation scores can vary between rounds.

In March, candidates received invitations across a score range of 417 to 597. Yellowknife accounted for 37 selections, while 28 candidates were selected from locations outside the capital.

The June round had a lower starting score. Invitations were issued to candidates with scores between 336 and 590. Of the 79 selections, 52 were associated with Yellowknife and 27 with communities outside the capital.

These figures should not be treated as a guaranteed future cut-off. EOI scores and invitation numbers can change depending on the candidate pool, program priorities and available nomination spaces.

NTNP to Host Two Online Information Sessions

The territorial government is also offering information sessions for prospective applicants and employers.

Both sessions will take place online through Zoom and will explain aspects of the NTNP process.

Francophone and Business Routes Follow Different Intake Rules

The updated EOI arrangement does not cover every NTNP pathway.

The territory’s Francophone Stream and Business Stream will continue to operate using a first-come, first-served intake approach.

Applicants interested in either pathway should therefore review the specific requirements and intake arrangements applicable to that stream instead of following the Employer-Driven EOI process.

Why This Development Matters for Canada PR Candidates

The additional nomination capacity is particularly relevant for foreign workers who already have, or are seeking, qualifying employment in the Northwest Territories.

Because the territory has a relatively small population and labour market, its immigration quota is limited compared with larger Canadian jurisdictions. Increasing the allocation gives the NTNP additional room to select workers while responding to employers’ recruitment requirements.

However, the additional spaces do not mean every EOI candidate will receive an invitation. Selection continues to depend on eligibility, ranking, labour market considerations and the number of spaces available at the time of a draw.

Candidates should also remember that meeting the basic requirements does not automatically result in nomination.

Applicants should also review their EOI information carefully before submission, particularly details relating to employment, education, language proficiency, work history and connections to the territory.

Since selection is competitive, candidates should understand their potential EOI score rather than assuming that simply entering the pool will result in an invitation.
