British Columbia has changed the timeline for a temporary immigration initiative aimed at workers who help maintain health services in smaller and remote communities.
Registration under the Temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative (TRHSI) will remain available until midnight on October 7, 2026. The province had previously planned to close registrations on August 31.
The extra time comes as British Columbia responds to disruptions linked to wildfires and gives eligible workers another opportunity to enter a pathway that can lead to permanent residence.

A Limited Pathway With 250 Nomination Places
The TRHSI is not a permanent immigration stream. It is a special, time-limited initiative introduced within British Columbia’s provincial nominee system.
The province expects to nominate as many as 250 eligible workers through the program. Registration began on June 15, 2026, and the first selection under the initiative has already taken place, with 60 candidates receiving invitations so far.
Because the number of nominations is capped, applicants should not treat the October deadline as a guarantee that spaces will still be available at that point.
Why B.C. Added More Time
The deadline change was announced by the provincial government on August 13.
According to the province, the extension is intended to take into account the impact of wildfires. Such disruptions can affect workers, employers and the ability of applicants to complete immigration-related steps within the original timeframe.
The revised date therefore gives prospective applicants several additional weeks to prepare and register.

The Workers This Initiative Targets
TRHSI is designed for certain employees whose work supports public healthcare facilities in eligible parts of British Columbia.
Three occupation groups qualify for consideration:
- Janitors, caretakers and heavy-duty cleaners — NOC 65312
- Light-duty cleaners — NOC 65310
- Security guards and related security service occupations — NOC 64410
Applicants must hold qualifying full-time employment with a B.C. health authority and must be working in an area that falls within the initiative’s rural or remote geographic requirements.
Location Is a Key Eligibility Factor
A job in British Columbia does not automatically qualify someone for TRHSI. The employment location must meet the program’s definition of a qualifying rural or remote area.
The initiative excludes the Metro Vancouver Regional District, Central Okanagan Regional District and most of the Capital Regional District.
There are, however, specific Capital Regional District locations that can qualify. These are Galiano Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, Salt Spring Island and Saturna Island.
This geographic focus reflects the purpose of the initiative: helping address staffing needs in communities outside B.C.’s major urban centres.
Eight Health Authorities Can Employ Eligible Workers
Workers must be employed by a participating public health authority. The recognized organizations are:
- First Nations Health Authority
- Fraser Health
- Interior Health
- Island Health
- Northern Health
- Providence Health Care
- Provincial Health Services Authority
- Vancouver Coastal Health
However, working for one of these organizations does not by itself result in a provincial nomination.
Each health authority has its own procedure for deciding whether it will support a worker’s BCPNP application. A health authority can choose not to support an application even when a worker appears to meet the immigration program’s basic conditions.

A Potential Opportunity for Workers in Essential Support Roles
The TRHSI gives British Columbia a way to recognize workers whose roles may be less prominent in traditional skilled immigration programs but remain important to healthcare operations.
For eligible cleaners and security workers already employed in qualifying communities, the extension creates additional time to pursue the provincial pathway. At the same time, the limited nomination capacity and employer-support requirement mean that interested workers should not delay their preparations.
With registration now scheduled to close on October 7, 2026, candidates who believe they qualify should review the complete BCPNP requirements and establish whether their health authority will support their nomination before registering.
